International World Water Day has been held annually since 1993 as a means of focusing global attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating sustainable management of freshwater resources. The World Water Day 2019 (WWD2019) will be commemorated on Friday, 22ndMarch 2019.
The theme for World Water Day 2019 is ‘Leaving no one behind’. This is an adaptation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) target for ensuring availability and sustainable management of water for all by 2030. By definition, this means leaving no one behind
This year’s theme – Leaving no one behind’–is an opportunity to reflect on the challenges related to the lack of clean water around the world, alongside the damaging effects of global warming, water resources pollution and damaged ground water tables.
In Rwanda the celebration of the World Water Day at national level will take place on 22nd March 2019 in Upper Nyabarongo catchment where Ministry of Environment and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands will launch officially a project aiming at rehabilitating Secoko-sub-catchment which is the most contributing sub-catchments to the siltation of Nyabarongo river. Upper Nyabarongo catchment is considered as the water tower of Rwanda and Nyabarongo river is now the main source for domestic water supply to the City of Kigali and is also supplying water to four hydropower plants, the main one being the Nyabrongo I hydropower plant with a design capacity of 28 MW. This event will be an opportunity to initiate a scheme known as Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) to be piloted through the IWRM program funded by the Kingdom of The Netherlands.
The celebration of the world water day will be preceded by a water week during which various water related activities will be conducted such as awareness raising, scientific conferences, launching of various water related projects, including:
- Two-day Media tour in SEBEYA catchment to witness the results of EIPs interventions that are being done
- Walk for water
- Launching of Policies and Strategies dissemination at community level in Nyanza
- Inauguration of Water Supply System in Rutsiro District
- IWRM 2019 conference and Exhibition at Marriott hotel
