Where we work

To demonstrate the value of the IWRM approach across a range of geographic and socio-economic contexts, Water for Growth is working across four demonstration catchments – Muvumba, Upper Nyabarongo, Nyabugogo, and Sebeya – to pilot governance frameworks and develop land and water management solutions tailored to their specific contexts.

Muvumba catchment

Provinces: Eastern and Northern Provinces
Districts: Nyagatare, Gicumbi and Gatsibo
Catchment area: 1,568 km2
Annual average rainfall: 995 mm/yr
Altitude: from 1,200 m (Nyagatare) to 2,500 m (Gicumbi)
Population: approx.. 725,068 inhabitants
Population density: 463 inhabitants/km2

Upper Nyabarongo catchment

Provinces: Southern Province, Western Province
Districts: Nyamagabe, Huye, Nyanza, Ruhango, Muhanga, Karongi, Ngororero and Rutsiro
Area: 3,348 km² (12.7 % of the total surface area of Rwanda)
Average annual rainfall: 1,365 mm/yr
Altitude: from 1,400 m to 3,000 m
Population: approx. 1,178,588
Population density: 352 inhabitants/km2

Nyabugogo catchment

Average annual rainfall: approx. 1200 mm/yr
Population: Approx. 1,355,222
